I’m not an investment expert.
And too, I suppose there is some kind of rule about disclosing personal investments in these sorts of things before we start though, so I’ll begin by stating that I do have a trivial amount of money in the stock market and index funds and probably some of my money is floating around in the AI bubble. Literal hundreds of dollars.
Trivial.
Either way, don’t take financial advice from me.
But my tangential financial dabblings in AI are only partially what makes me interested in the money side of the twists and turns of whatever purported shell game is transpiring in this era of technology capitalism.
My understanding of the dark side of how financial rules are seemingly being bent in favour of rewarding these profit-failing companies comes from secondary sources and commentary, like Doctorow[1] and Zitron[2] who have been online a lot lately waving the warning flags of psychological market manipulation and prophesying the bursting of the AI bubble and suggesting in no uncertain terms that casual investors and the pension funds of average blokes are about to help build massive golden parachutes for the very people who inflated the bubble in the first place.
The recent lesson of the stock crashout of Musk’s SpaceX following an overhyped IPO[3] that happened coincidentally around about the same time I was kicking off this blog apparently failed to stick, and we’re given the sense that the investment community is primed to put their hand to the hot stove a couple more times soon.
Anthropic and OpenAI are, if the rumour mills and paperwork indicators are to be believed queuing up for their own public offerings as I write this in early August.
It kinda makes one wonder if the metaphorical charred flesh of a hot stove encounter of the past is actually a failure to learn from mistakes—or clever people outsmarting the prideful wisdom of Wall Street.
Either way, I think I’ll keep my money in something relatively safe and rational—maybe Bitcoin. Sigh.
